Negotiation Competition Challenges Law Students

Author Ross Blankenship educates through his writing and by lending his expertise to entrepreneurs. Ross Blankenship earned a juris doctor from the Washington University School of Law, where he also became a champion in the regional negotiation competition and advanced as a finalist in the national competition, which is organized by the American Bar Association.

The American Bar Association negotiation competition is held each year. The event requires law students to compete in a negotiation simulation. At each level of competition, the students, who are acting as lawyers, must navigate different legal problems in a particular topic. Topics include areas such as employment law and intellectual property law.

Students compete on teams, and each team is made up of two students from the same school. Teams must first participate in regional competitions that are hosted by select schools around the country. If they advance, they then go on to the national competition, which has been held in Chicago the last three years. A panel of judges rates each team's performance throughout the process.

Those teams that earn a top place in the national competition are invited to take part in the international negotiation competition, which is held in a different country each year. The 2020 competition will be held in the United States in Missoula, Montana.
